Fair housing

Everyone should get a fair shot at a place to live. Unido is built for the Central Valley, and a lot of the people using it have been turned down before for reasons that had nothing to do with whether they'd be good to live with. We build against that.

What the law protects

California's list is longer than most people think, and it's different from the federal one. Instead of summarizing it and getting it a little wrong, we send you to the state's own page. The Civil Rights Department keeps it current.

How we build against discrimination

  • Listings can't advertise a preference about who lives there. We took out tags like "LGBTQ friendly", "children welcome" and "40+ welcome", including the friendly ones. Stating a preference either way is the problem.

  • House rules and application questions get checked automatically. Text that mentions a protected class is blocked before it saves, on our server as well as in the browser.

  • We never ask about immigration status. There's nowhere in the product to record it.

  • Applicants share income as a range, not an exact number. Lifestyle answers are about habits only, like schedules and noise. Never about who someone is.

  • Every listing looks the same to everyone who sees it. We don't rank, score or sort applicants, and we don't hide people based on anything that stands in for who they are.

If it happens to you

You can file a housing discrimination complaint with California's Civil Rights Department or with HUD, at no cost and without a lawyer. Our Resources page links both, along with free legal aid in the Central Valley. You can also email us and we'll point you to the right place.
